I wonder if teachers care. If they sit in class, figuring out who can’t sleep late at night, who gets abused at home, who can’t even face a mirror. I wonder if they care about the effect of the deadlines they set; how much stress their pupils are already under. I wonder if I told the teachers how much I need a break, how much I just need some space from school, how many of them would actually care.

As a student preparing for a career in secondary English education, I would say that teachers understand and care a lot more than you think they do. I can’t speak for all teaching programs, but my certification requires several classes on adolescent development; I think that it’s safe to assume that most programs do in some way. But I digress, while some people do go into teaching for the wrong reasons, I’d be willing to bet (what little money I’ll be making for the rest of my life :)) that a good portion of people who aim to become teachers do it because of their students. In all of my education class, we spend 90% of our time discussing what works and doesn’t work for students, what kinds of troubles students have at home, with friends, and with family, and a slew of tools that will help us help students not only make it through school, but make it through with the knowledge they need to be successful in any endeavor.

Of course, as a student, it doesn’t always feel like that. I feel like I can say this because I am still a student, and I feel like teachers never stop being students either, good ones at least. However, it is really important for you to remember that teachers have deadlines, too. Teachers also have objectives and goals for students to meet, and they spend tons and tons of personal time trying to find ways for students to meet those objectives in a fun and positive way. It may not always feel like that either, but good teachers do. And at the end of the day, after the stresses of planning and preparing for school, teachers are people, too. They have relationship problems. They have family problems. They have friendship problems, too. There are bad days and sleepless nights. Yet, they have to get up each morning and work through it, just like you, in order to (hopefully) help their students.

I really didn’t mean for this to feel like a lecture; it just really disheartens me to scroll through my dash and see posts like this knowing how hard my classmates, friends, colleagues, mentors, professors, and my mom (who is also a teacher) work to learn and grow each day as educators to make students’ lives easier. I hope that things get easier. Just remember that you’re not alone in your struggles.

…I guess you forgot the part called “sarcasm.” People typically say ‘no shit, Sherlock’ when someone has made a particularly unintelligent observation; thus, the Sherlock reference is meant to be hatefully ironic (sarcasm). In other words, Sherlock makes brilliant observations, but the one said person made was the opposite of brilliant.
